Sky Island by L. Frank Baum
L. Frank Baum is best known for creating Oz, but 'Sky Island' proves he had plenty of other magical worlds up his sleeve. This book is a standalone adventure that's just as charming and inventive.
The Story
It all starts with a magic umbrella. Two kids from California, the sensible girl Trot and the oddly-named boy Button-Bright, get carried away by it and land on a floating island in the sky. This island is literally split in two. The Pink Country is, well, pink. Everyone is painfully polite, the sun never sets, and they love rules and order. Just over a wall is the Blue Country, where everything is a gloomy blue, it's always twilight, and the people are constantly bickering and miserable.
The two nations are locked in a silly but serious feud over the ownership of the magic umbrella, which is the only way to travel to and from the island. Trot and Button-Bright, wanting to get home, find themselves bouncing between the two kingdoms, dealing with a snooty Pinky king, a blustering Blue king, and a whole cast of strange creatures, including a very helpful parrot named Polly. Their journey is a puzzle of manners, magic, and finding common sense in a place that has very little of it.
Why You Should Read It
What I love about this book is how cleverly funny it is. Baum isn't just building a fantasy land; he's poking gentle fun at politics, stubbornness, and how silly people can be when they get stuck in their ways. The conflict isn't about epic battles, but about misunderstandings and pride. Trot is a fantastic, no-nonsense heroine, and Button-Bright's literal-mindedness leads to some hilarious moments.
It's also a wonderfully quick read. The world-building is immediate and visual—you can picture the stark divide between the pink and blue lands instantly. The story moves at a breezy pace, full of small adventures and witty conversations that keep you smiling.
Final Verdict
This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys classic children's fantasy but wants to explore beyond Oz. It's great for younger readers ready for a chapter book, or for adults who appreciate a clever, lighthearted satire wrapped in a fairy tale. If you enjoy stories where the real magic is in the characters using their wits instead of a wand, you'll have a blast with 'Sky Island.' It's a forgotten classic that deserves a spot on the shelf right next to 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.'
